Nichirin Swords are special weapons made of Sun Ore that Slayers working under the Slayer Corps wield in order to successfully eliminate Demons.
Overview
In the anime, Nichirin swords (amongst other Nichirin weaponry) are special swords made to kill Demons. The appearance of these special blades is identical to that of a regular katana, however they are made with a material that has an extraordinary ability that allows a Slayer to finish off a Demon. When obtained, it is seen that the blade will change color depending on the owner of the sword. However, the holder is required to have a certain amount of skill, or the blade will not change color. Some Slayers, like Inosuke, use two Nichirin blades instead of one, with both blades having parts chipped out to allow them to saw through Demons. Other Slayers, like Tengen Uzui, Gyomei Himejima, and Mitsuri Kanroji, have alternate weapons instead of the regular katana. Mitsuri wields a Whip, Gyomei uses a Flail and Axe, while Tengen has two Cleavers.
Note: Swords are not droppable, and are non-refundable, meaning once crafted you cannot get those materials back again. Your sword may look different from the photos depending on your Nichirin's color. The special Insect Breathing, Beast Breathing, Sound Breathing, Stone Breathing, Love Breathing, and Moon Breathing weapons can only be obtained by using the corresponding Breathing Style, and anyone who has a different breathing, such as a Sun Breather with one of Sound Breathing's Cleavers, has used a bug to get it that way.

- The Flesh Katana has a long-ranged, Shichishito-version in the manga, as utilized by Kokushibo.
- If you want to use the custom nichirin's original color, simply lunge while keeping your blade sheathed, do note that this only works the first time after every respawn.
- In the original source, the colors of a Nichirin sword are different depending on the user. For example, Inosuke Hashibira's katanas are an indigo-gray color, reflecting his Beast Breathing style, which is a derivative of Wind Breathing. Zenitsu Agatsuma has a unique blade, where its coloration does not form as a solid band like a regular Nichirin katana, but instead as a lightning motif down the length of his blade.
- In Tanjiro's case, despite him being a user of Water Breathing during a majority of the first season of the anime, his sword was the colour black instead of the usual blue when he first unsheathed his blade. This was because of his family's Hinokami Kagura (which was actually Sun Breathing disguised as a ritual) making his blade black. Furthermore, a black blade could be considered a bad omen, as the Demon Slayer wielding a black blade would not progress far due to the fact that they would die early on before much could be learned about the blade itself. It can be assumed that the color of the sword is associated with the Breathing Style the user is best suited for, with Black meaning that the user would best be suited for Sun Breathing. In-game, however, the color you get is randomized and your Breathing Style has no jurisdiction on which color you may receive.
- In the past, Nichirin colors used to give different buffs depending on what color you got(Confirmation Needed). Due to it being an unfair advantage to other players (when clans already exist) and also because everybody wanted to get the same color, these buffs have been removed and now the colors are simply cosmetic. In theory, these are what could be what Slayers would have to actually compete better against the Demon players, since on release Demons had less content and gameplay, but were way stronger in PVP and PVE than Slayers in both stats and BDAs, having more variety in moveset before other Breathing Styles like Stone, Sun, and Sound were released. The buffs of each color used to be:
- Black: 20% Attack speed, 20% Attack damage, 20% More Stamina drain in M1 & M2.
- Dark Purple: M1/M2 Stamina drain reduced by 50%.
- Crimson: 10% Attack speed, 10% lifesteal on M1.
- Green: 20% Attack damage.
- Yellow: 20% Attack speed.
- Orange: 2% - 5% chance to set enemies on fire.
- Other: None.
- There is a certain bug when using dual-wielding breathing styles like Sound or Beast, where if the user used lunge whilst its blades are sheathed will cause the user's avatar to pull out one sword instead of two. It's cool in terms of aesthetics, but very bad in combat capabilities, as it'll deal half the damage of the default doubled damage it gives. So it is highly advised to unsheathe your swords first before lunging.
- The player can also use lunge instead of unsheathing their sword to bring out a silver coloured nichirin if they do not prefer their current colour (only works the first time after respawning/joining the game)
- Drinking a Breath Indict can cause your Nichirin to revert back to a Rusty Katana. this is because in order to keep an upgraded katana, you require a Breathing Style.
- The damage of your moves is scaled with the damage of your nichirin (The more damage your nichirin does, the more damage your moves will do)
